According to Japanese and Japanese inscriptions, Japan means the "sunrise" or "the land of the rising sun." Japan is composed of about 6,852 volcanic islands. The four largest islands are Honsun, Hokkaido, Sikuku and Kusu, occupying about ninety percent of Japan's land area. The state consists of 47 prefectures, 8 regions. The world's population is about the 127 million people. The composition of the population is homogeneous. The Japanese make up 98.5% of the entire population of Japan. The population of Tokyo is 9.1 million people.
Archaeological investigations show that the territory of Japan was inhabited by the upper paleolithic. The first mention of Japan is found in Chinese historical texts, which are attributed to the first century. Japan has gone through a long isolation period, not being in contact with China and Western Europe.
